John Hannan, in his 29th year as Director at MVHS, is a professional musician in Los Angeles and Orange County. In addition to his duties at the school, he has directed the Americus Brass Band and worked as a historical music consultant on film productions including "North & South Part I & II" "The Alamo, Once Upon a Texas Train," and "Glory." He received his B.M./M.A. degree from California State University at Long Beach. He has helped MVHS instrumental music students earn honors throughout California, the United States and internationally.
Douglas Meeuwsen has a B.A. in Music Education and Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University. He has done graduate work at North Texas State and San Diego State Universities. He has extensive experience as a trumpet artist in all genres including symphonic, Latin, jazz, brass quintet, solo and has performed as a studio musician. He previously taught at Vista and Poway High Schools and has been a clinician and judge in California for the last 20 years.

Jay Murphy, Visual Design. WGI/DCI designer Jay Murphy is well-known for bring gold to numerous teams, including the multi-decorated DCI Champion Blue Devils. Jay is a graduate of Marquette University and the University of Massachusetts, and has been an instructor with the Blue Devils "A" Corps since 1981. Through his work with the San Jose Raiders and the Blue Devils Winter Guards, Jay instructed the Winter Guard International World Class Champions every year from 1990 through 1998. 2003 marked another WGI championship year for Jay with the San Jose Raiders. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the winter guard activity, Jay was awarded Winter Guard International's prestigious Laurel Award in 1995. Jay's additional visual design credits include: St. Joseph's Winter Guard of Medford, MA; St. Anthony's Imperials Winter Guard of Everett, MA; St. Johns of Beverly, MA; Fairfield High School of Fairfield, CA; and Clovis West High School of Fresno, CA.
Jon Goldman, Brass Caption Head. John, known as "Pops" to the kids, is a graduate of Valencia High School in Placentia, CA, and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He holds degrees in Music Production & Engineering and Music Business. Along with performing experience with the DCI World Champion Blue Devils and the Tony Award-winning Broadway show "Blast!" Jon has also performed as a trombonist with notable musicians such as Wayne Bergeron, Andy Martin, Bob McChesney, Carl Saunders, Joey Sellers, Eric Marienthal, Sean Billings, Travis Gould, Phil Wilson and Bruce Babad. Currently, Jon is a Product Marketing Specialist for Yamaha Wind Instruments and spends his days working with both World and Open Class Drum Corps as well as writing for the Yamaha website, producing media for Yamaha Hub, attending trade and product specialty shows and planning his next vacation.
Robby Jacobson, Color Guard Caption Head. Robby and his staff brought our Scholastic Open Winter Guard Gold in WGASC Championships and Bronze at WGI Championships, moving MVHS Winter Guard into Scholastic World competition beginning in 2010. Robby marched with the Riverside City College Marching Auxiliary and was a member of the multi-award winning Fantasia Winter Guard. He is a current member of the WGASC Advisory Committee. Robby also provides guard instruction to the Blue Devils, Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps, Rancho Bernardo High School Color Guard and Winter Guard and the WGI Independent World Champion Fantasia Winter Guard.
Tim Mikan, Color Guard Instructor. Tim has proven himself to be a veritable force in visual design and instruction. He actively engaged in the arts and serves as an educator and clinician in numerous formats throughout the United States. The founder of In-Step Design, he has been a consultant or clinician for more than 30 organizations that include professional ensembles, both middle and high school and colleges. Tim's musical endeavors include numerous courses in music and jazz studies as well as invitation to perform at the 1998 International Association of Jazz Educators annual Convention in New York. in addition to working with MVHS, Tim currently works with Los Alamitos High School and Fantasia Winter Guard.
Jacob Lapre, Woodwind Coach. Jacob graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School and attended Cal State Fullerton. Jacob has taught many Southern California high schools such as Diamond Bar, Poway, Westview, Vista, Nogales, and Murrieta Valley. He also taught at South Pointe Middle School and Mesa Verde Middle School He currently is the Assistant Director of Music at Black Mountain Middle School and is the director of the jazz program at Mt. Carmel High School.
Mike Jackson, Percussion Caption Head. For over two decades, Mike has been writing, teaching and designing shows for some of the most nationally recognized percussion programs in the United States. These include Mission Viejo HS, RCC, Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps. Currently, Mike is the percussion caption head/arranger for the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. Mike is a co-founder and current board member for the Southern California Percussion Alliance. He also sits on the Board of Directors for Winter Guard International and was recently inducted into the WGI Hall of Fame. Mike is a Yamaha performing artist and proudly uses Evans Drumheads, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks/Mallets.
Roger Carter, Battery Supervisor. Roger Carter has decades of experience with the drums. He was first introduced to the world of marching percussion as a student at Mission Viejo High School, and continued his drumming development in Southern California with the Kingsmen and the Velvet Knights. Afterward he spent 4 years as a member of the Concord Blue Devils, culminating with two years as center snare/section leader, a DCI championship, and a high percussion award. He then spent 6 years as a staff member with BD, winning 3 DCI titles and 2 high percussion awards. Roger continued his drum corps teaching experience with the Crossmen and later the Madison Scouts. He has worked with Riverside Community College, was battery caption head/arranger for the Freelancers from 2002-2009, and spent 10 years as a battery instructor for James Logan High School. In 2012, Carter joined the percussion staff of the Bluecoats as a snare tech. In 2013 he assumed the role of Percussion Caption Head, a position he presently holds. He is also a battery instructor for Orange County Independent Percussion, Dana Hills High School, and Capistrano Valley High School in Southern California. Roger proudly uses Vic Firth Sticks/Mallets, Evans Drumheads, and is a performing artist with TAMA Marching Percussion.
Charlene Doan, Front Ensemble Coordinator. Charlene Doan has worked with many successful ensembles that compete in the indoor and outdoor percussion activity, including the Independent World WGI finalist ensemble Orange County Independent Percussion, the Open Class DCI champions Blue Devils B, the SCPA A Class Champion Mission Viejo HS, WBA and ADLA Champions Cerritos HS, and a handful of other percussion ensembles around Southern California. Charlene's performance experience includes a four year run as a member of the Pulse Percussion front ensemble where she served as the section leader and aged out with a WGI Gold Medal in 2010. She was also a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Front Ensemble in 2009. In addition to her extensive and relatively young career in percussion, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics and Accounting from University of California, Irvine in 2009. She currently lives in Anaheim, California.
Daniel Blank, Violin Coach. Daniel Blank started playing the violin at age 9 and continued playing classical music all through school. He has continued with classical studies, but his musical interests now cover a wide range. After many years of playing Rock and Pop in the Northwest and Alaska, he moved to Nashville, where he spent 10 years touring around the country with such artists as Tanya Tucker, Johnny Paycheck and Trick Pony. He also performed many times on the Grand Ole Opry stage, live and on television broadcasts and also on nationally broadcast shows such as CBS' The Early Show and CNN Headline News' In The Front Row. He has since moved back home to Southern California, where he teaches extensively at local schools and privately. He also performs regularly around the Southland and you can find him playing anything from string quartets to square dances and jazz to country.
